Description

This property comprises Nos 2-12 Hallfield Road and No 18 Lumb Lane, dating from around 1855-60. It is part of a terrace development contemporary with Peel Square on Lumb Lane. The building is constructed of sandstone with ashlar dressings, displaying Italianate architectural details of an unusual design. It has slate roofs with moulded eaves supported by console brackets. A sill band runs along the first floor. Nos 2 and 4, and Nos 8 and 10, project slightly and feature attic storeys with flanking sections of pierced balustrading. Each has two light square mullioned windows set within ashlar panels, featuring an egg and dart string course and a narrow central panel. The attic windows are similarly recessed, composed of three squat, round-headed lights. The entrances are coupled, with a central archway passageway beneath a common entablature supported by pilasters with modified Corinthian capitals. The frieze above each entrance incorporates elaborate scrolled acanthus leaf ornament. Nos 6 and 12 have revealed sash windows with apron panels on the first floor and two-light square mullioned windows on the ground floor, with similar pilastered doorways. No 18 Lumb Lane has a plain front with a cornice and sill band facing Hallfield Road, and a three-window front on Lumb Lane. It features a quoin pilaster and window recesses capped in a style matching the windows on Hallfield Road. A central architrave frames a two-light window above a projecting ashlar entrance with an eared architrave framed doorway, acanthus leaf enrichment, a female head keystone, and a moulded cornice.
