Description

Nos 439 to 443 on Shetcliffe Lane is a Grade II* listed building, originally built as a single property in the 15th or 16th century as a timber-framed yeoman's house. It was encased in coursed gritstone in 1625 and features two storeys with a stone slate roof, saddlestones, and kneelers. The building has a projecting cross gable on the left side, also with a saddlestone and kneelers, and an external chimney stack on the east side.

The windows are three and four-light chamfered mullions with drip moulds. The original doorway has been altered to a two-light chamfered mullion window on the right, featuring a four-centred arch in a square head and a cornice on consoles that support two shields inscribed with the initials I H and E H, along with a central panel that bears the date 1625. The current entrance, dating from around 1800, is located on the sides of the building. The rear of No 443 includes a seven-light chamfered mullion window.

Inside No 443, there are edged chamfered beams and wall posts visible at the top of an 18th-century stone tread staircase. The original south gable end retains its king post roof truss and studding, and the building was extended to the south around 1625. The ground floor west room, or parlour, features a large chamfered jamb stone fireplace with a massive shaped lintel and 17th-century oak panelling, some of which has been reset, with decorated panels possibly originating from a court cupboard. A bracket cornice crosses the panelling and includes a fleur-de-lis frieze. The first-floor south-west corner bedroom has a fireplace with a four-centred arch and chamfered jambs. The south-east ground floor room contains reset 17th-century panelling with a fan pattern frieze and a reset fireplace dated 1682.
