Description

This is a fine late 17th-century hall, built by the Richardson family, whose ancestral seat was Bierley Hall. The main front of the building faces south. It is constructed of coursed gritstone with gabled wings and has a stone slate roof. Weathered string courses run across the front at window head level on both floors. The gables feature saddlestones, kneelers, and shaped finials.

The wings incorporate large, paired, three-light, chamfered mullion and transom windows on both floors; small panes remain in the first-floor windows of the right-hand wing. The gables contain small, round-headed windows with panelled spandrels. The right-hand wing is one bay wider, incorporating a recessed porch with splayed jambs, impost mouldings and a semi-circular arch. Above the porch is a carved panel in shallow relief depicting the initials of the builder, Richard Richardson, and his wife, Elizabeth Richardson, along with the date 1672. The recessed centre has a full-width ground-floor hall window, which is a group of three three-light mullion and transom windows. A large eight-light mullion and transom window sits above this under the eaves. A secondary four-centred arch doorway is situated on the left-hand wing, sharing a drip mould with the adjacent window. The east side of the hall features similar three-light windows and a doorway with moulded jambs, a convex-concave lintel decorated with floral discs. A 18th and 19th-century extension is attached to the rear of the building, between the gables. The interior has been modernised, and the principal chimney breast projects into the entrance passage.
