Description

Numbers 2 and 4, along with the adjoining coach house to the left, were built around 1840 as a pair of villas, with No 4 featuring a coach house wing. The buildings are two storeys high, constructed from dressed sandstone that resembles brick. They have three bay fronts with a plinth, a shallow frieze, and a stone gutter with an eaves cornice. The roofs are made of stone slate and feature corniced chimneys. Each central first floor window has an architrave surround. The doorways are Tuscan pilastered with deep entablatures. No 4 has a slightly later addition of two-storey rectangular bay windows on the left and canted bays on the right, both with pilastered sash lights, and the eaves cornice continues over with a blocking course. To the left of No 4, there is a recessed one bay link to the two-storey coach house. On the first floor of the coach house, there are two windows and a glazed door with an archivolt arch that leads to a shallow balcony with a simple geometric iron rail. The coach house doors have been renewed and originally came from the demolished Chapel Lane Chapel, which was located on the site of the present Law Courts.
