Description

Nos 6 and 8 Melbourne Place, built around 1840, were originally constructed as a large villa before being subdivided. This two-storey building is made of sandstone ashlar and features a long five-bay front with a very shallow central break that includes three windows. The hipped slate roof is complemented by corniced chimneys. Architectural details include quoin pilasters, a frieze, a moulded cornice, and a blocking course that projects forward over the pilasters and the central break, with the blocking course slightly heightened in these areas.

A sill band on the first floor integrates with the quoin pilasters, and the revealed sashes have quoins extending down to the sill band on the first floor. The central first-floor window is distinguished by a blind with an eared architrave surround. On the ground floor, the outer windows are tripartite, flanked by Tuscan pilasters and capped with shallow leaf moulded consoles, featuring deep entablatures with projecting cornices. The central entrance is marked by a four-panel door and a rectangular marginal glazed fanlight, flanked by Tuscan pilasters and topped with an entablature that has a projecting cornice and blocking course. There are later side entrances. Nos 6 and 8 likely date from the late 1830s when they were originally one house.
