Description
Melbourne Terrace comprises Nos. 1 to 10, a row of approximately ten small, two-storey houses dating from around 1850 to 1860. The houses are built stepped down the slope, in groups of two or three. They are constructed of pitch-faced sandstone finished as “bricks,” with a sill band on the first floor that sweeps down to the steps. A moulded ashlar eaves cornice is present, along with slate roofs punctuated by corniced chimneys. Each house has two sash windows with plain ashlar surrounds on the first floor, and a two-light square mullion window on the ground floor. No. 1 features a canted ashlar bay window with a cornice and blocking course. The doorways are topped with semi-circular fanlights, featuring vermiculated voussoirs and keystones to the arches. The row is listed for its overall architectural interest and the quality of the stonework detailing.
