Description
This is a block of three houses located at 49, 51, and 53 St George’s Place. Numbers 49 and 53 were built around 1840-1846 as detached houses, with number 51 being an infill property constructed between 1846 and 1850. The houses are built of sandstone, designed to look like brick. Number 49 has a decorative moulding along the first-floor window sills, while number 51 has a plain band. All three have decorative eaves cornices and stone slate roofs, with a hipped roof on number 49. Corniced chimneys are also present. Each house has a symmetrical three-bay elevation. The windows are sash windows with the reveals extending below the sills to create shallow aprons. The central windows of numbers 49 and 53 have architrave surrounds with a battered effect. Number 51 features two-light square mullion windows on the ground floor. The doorway of number 49 has an arched fanlight, a decorative surround on consoles, and a broken entablement, similar to the design of numbers 41 to 47 (odd). Number 51 has a segmental arched fanlight and shallow fluted consoles supporting a cornice over the doorway, while number 53 features a Doric pilastered doorway with an entablature, a six-panel door, and a rectangular fanlight.
