Description

Melbourne Almshouses, dated 1845, are a group of almshouses built in a Jacobean style. They are constructed of thin sandstone “bricks” and are single-storey in height. The building features two slight gabled breaks containing doorways for numbers 22 and 32, and a larger gabled break in the centre. Weathered saddlestones rise from shaped kneelers above the gables, and the roof is covered with fish scale slates. Corniced chimneys are present. The windows are wood casements set in chamfered ashlar reveals. The doorways have large, roll-moulded labels resting on stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. The central archway is dressed with long and short quoins. A crest is positioned in the gable above the central archway, along with a name plaque bearing the date.
