Description
Nos. 17 and 18, East Beach, are a pair of marine villas built around 1845-1860, now subdivided into flats. They are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with sandstone dressings and a slate roof. The buildings have a double-pile plan beneath a two-span roof, with individual back extensions, designed in the Jacobethan style.
They stand two storeys high and originally featured a symmetrical façade with 2+2 windows. The gabled wings project forward and are connected at the ground floor by a loggia that spans the main range. Architectural details include a plinth, quoins, a weathered first-floor sill band, wing gables, and intermediate gablets adorned with cusped bargeboards and obelisk finials, although the finial is missing from No. 17.
The loggia, made of brick and sandstone ashlar, has a continuous cavetto-moulded and weathered band along with a stone parapet. The section for No. 17 features pilasters framing an opening with 20th-century windows, while No. 18 has a large rectangular window with a quoined surround and a lowered sill for French windows. Above the loggia, both villas have three-light casements beneath gablets.
The wing of No. 17 includes an early 20th-century stone two-storey canted bay window, while No. 18 has a more recent two-storey triangular bay window made of lead and wood. The roof has three ridge chimneys, and the return walls include side wings that have been altered in various ways.
These villas are part of a significant mid-19th century seaside development of villas and boarding houses.
