Description
10 East Beach is a mid-19th century marine villa or lodging house that has been converted into flats. The building is constructed of brown brick in Flemish bond, with sandstone dressings and a slate roof. It has an irregular double-depth plan with a back extension that interlocks with No. 11 to the right. The design is in the Tudor style.
The villa stands two and a half storeys tall and features a symmetrical facade with three windows across, consisting of gabled outer bays that flank a very narrow center topped with a gablet. The central section includes a Tudor-arched doorway with a stone surround beneath a rectangular lintel and a hoodmould. Above the doorway is a tall rectangular oriel window on the first floor, which has a panelled apron, weathered sill, cornice, and glazing with margin panes and a two-pane overlight. A half-dormer with a two-light casement window is situated above the oriel. The outer bays feature large transomed six-light casements, all with hoodmoulds. The ground floor casements have returned ends that run out as a band, while the attic level windows have altered glazing, and all except those at the attic level have chamfered stone surrounds.
This building forms part of a group with No. 9 attached to the left and No. 11 attached to the right, contributing to a notable mid-19th century seaside development of villas and boarding houses.
