Description

A pair of marine villas dating from the mid to later 19th century, altered subsequently. Constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with sandstone dressings and a slate roof. The buildings are arranged in an H-plan, with each house featuring a double-fronted facade, short projecting wings, and long back extensions. The architectural style is a simplified form of Gothic Revival.

The villas are two-and-a-half storeys high, with a 1:2+2:1 window arrangement. A moulded eaves cornice runs around the wings as a band, and the gables have kneelers. The angled front has a gabled porch with a two-centred arched doorway, a chamfered surround, a hoodmould with block stops, and an emphatic gable coping with kneelers. The main range features square windows with deep chamfered surrounds and hoodmoulds; the two ground floor windows are larger and linked by a decorative band. The wings have stone two-storey canted bay windows and attic windows that interrupt the eaves band. A tall ridge chimney stack is located at the junction of the two houses.

These villas form a group with number 7 to the left and number 9 to the right, and contribute to a significant mid-19th century seaside development of villas and boarding houses.
