Description

The Queens Hotel is a mid-19th century hotel, substantially remodelled internally. It is constructed of painted yellow brick with white sandstone dressings, and has a graduated slate roof. The building occupies a corner site, forming an L-shape around a rear courtyard. It is designed in a debased classical style. The hotel is three storeys high, with a 2:1:2 window arrangement, symmetrical in design. The central section projects slightly, and there is a two-story canted bay at each end. Corner pilasters run up the facade, with a brick sill band to the first floor, a plain frieze, a moulded cornice, and a blocking course above.

The central section features a wide, single-story porch with a round-headed arched opening, a stone surround including imposts and keystone, and a 20th-century metal fascia and railings. A four-pane sash window is located at the first floor level, with large consoles supporting a plain stone panel. The canted bays have moulded cornices with blocking courses. The ground floor windows have been altered, while those on the first floor feature four-pane sashes. The second floor windows to the left have unhorned 12-pane sashes, but the centre window and those to the right have 12-pane top-hung casements. Stone gable copings are present, along with chimneys on the left gable, the front slope left of centre, and the ridge right of centre.

A doorway is attached to the left end, set within a stone architrave shared with the adjacent building. The gable wall on the right-hand side has three windows, corner pilasters, and a low, two-story, three-window range beyond. The ground floor interior has been remodelled.
