Description

A pair of marine villas, now subdivided, were built around 1845-60 and subsequently altered. They are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with sandstone dressings and a graduated slate roof. The buildings are arranged in an H-plan, with double-pile construction, entrance halls to an adjoining pair, and individual back extensions. The architectural style is Jacobethan.

The villas are two-and-a-half storeys, with a symmetrical five-window range incorporating a gabled centre and slightly projecting gabled ends. Features include a stone plinth, oversailing eaves and verges with barge-boards, and remains of apex finials (missing from the centre and right).

The central section features coupled, single-storey gabled porches with cross-gabled roofs, barge-boards, and tall finials. These porches have single-light windows to the front and doorways in the sides, all with stone surrounds and hoodmoulds. Above and between the porches is a rectangular stone oriel with a transomed six-light window featuring moulded transoms and mullions, margin panes, and a small single-light window in the gable above. The gabled outer bays have stone two-storey canted bay windows; the ground-floor openings were formerly raised from ground level but now have altered glazing and raised sills. Two-light casements are present in the attics. The intermediate bays have rectangular windows with stone surrounds and hoodmoulds, also with altered glazing. The roof is two-span with inserted skylight windows, and includes gable and ridge chimneys.

The buildings form a group with the associated garden wall to the front, number 14A to the left, numbers 17 and 18 to the right, and are part of a notable mid-19th century seaside development of villas and boarding houses.
