Description

Nos 40 to 44 on West Street, dating from around the 1830s, were originally a coach-house. This two-storey building is constructed of ivy-clad red brick set on a stone plinth. It has a "U" shape with hipped slate roofs and flat eaves. The side blocks feature one window each facing the courtyard and the front, while the main block has three windows; No 40 has all cross-glazed sash windows, while the other two have two-light glazing bar casements with segmental heads on the first floor and glazing bar sashes with segmental heads on the ground floor. The doorways are located in the inner corners, with No 40 featuring a fluted column supporting a flat roof porch, and No 44 having an original panelled scroll bracket for its flat hood. The doors are six-panel, with the upper panels glazed. The ground floor is dominated by large segmental-headed coach doors made of beaded planks, with the right-hand door being narrower. There is a three-window return to the north-west, with flint and brick lacing bands. Four tall banded brick piers on gault brick bases, with plain moulded caps adorned with clinker ornament, support the pavement; the two central piers are linked by an iron lamp overthrow. Access to No 42 is through the coach arch, located at the rear of No 40.
