Description
Nos 1 and 2 St John's Square are mid-19th century Gothic almshouses. They are single-storey buildings constructed with flint and ashlar in a chequerwork pattern. Each end features gabled breaks with coped gables and angel figures on saddlestones. There are crocketted aedicules on each gable, with shields displayed inside: a lamb and flag on the left, and a chevron impaled by an indented bar with three mullets on the right. The roof is tiled and has a central ashlar chimney. A central buttress is flanked on each side by a triplet of ogee-headed lights with leaded panes. The pointed doorways are accompanied by flanking lancets in the gables, with lobbies inside. The right-hand corner of the building is rounded.
