Description
St John's Hospital Chapel is a Grade II* listed building that is part of the St John's Hospital Complex. The first documentary evidence of the site dates back to 1195, with a chapel reportedly dedicated in 1217. The chapel forms a 'T' plan extension to Nos 4 and 5. Its east window, which has three lights, suggests it was built around 1300. In the 18th century, it was converted into a cottage and was restored in 1868. The exterior features flint and ashlar chequerwork, a tiled roof with a fishscale band, and a coped gable with an unusual saddlestone on the east side. There is a mid-19th century belfry on the ashlar and flint chequed gable end. On the north side, there are two 2-light windows that likely date from the late 14th century; the left window has a quatrefoil above it, while the right window features an elongated quatrefoil. The south side has a 2-light ogee window with an elongated upright quatrefoil. There are traces of two possible 12th-century wall buttresses. The entrance features a moulded four-centred arch-headed doorway to the left, with restored tracery panels. The interior is plain, with curved braces supporting the trusses.
