Description
Nos 37 and 39 on West Street are two-storey buildings that are believed to have been constructed in 1651. They feature thatched roofs and are made of painted brick with a projecting plinth. On the first floor, there are wide spaced studs in the centre and to the left.
For No 37, there are four two-light glazing bar casements on the first floor. The ground floor includes a small buttress to the left and two shop windows; the left window is mid-19th century with flanking pilasters and a cornice, while the right window is a modern four-light bow. There is a central door and an additional window to the right, next to a blocked doorway, which is a tripartite glazing bar sash with shutters. The interior of the ground floor has been opened up for use as a shop, and there is a catslide lean-to at the rear.
No 39 has an altered front with a platband, and the first floor is slightly raised with overlapped eaves courses. It features three windows on the first floor and two on the ground floor, all of which are glazing bar two-light casements with shutters on the ground floor. The door to the left has six flush panels, with the upper two being glazed, and it is fitted with a ball and dolphin knocker. The building has one ridge and three off-ridge chimneys, and the north-west gable is timber framed with a weatherboarded tip. The layout is 'L' shaped, with a former cloth-weavers' shed at the rear. Inside, the front room on the ground floor has an exposed inglenook and Jacobean panelling that was removed from No 20 West Street.
