Description
No. 5 St John's Square is a Grade II* listed building that forms a wing at right angles to the north of No. 3. It is part of the St John's Hospital complex and was once a chapel. The west front, dating from around 1400, features stone and flint chequerwork, with brick lacing courses on the left as repairs. The building has two storeys and an offset string course halfway up the first floor, topped with a tiled roof. There is one three-light window on the first floor and a two-light window on the ground floor. Roughly central is a recess that reveals a late Norman pier with a heavy capital. To the right, there is a lean-to (see No. 8). The gable end to the north is coped and includes paired pointed arch lights. The building has buttresses on the centre and right-hand side, with brick repairs to the chequerwork flint and ashlar. There are traces to the right of a window with square-headed tracery that contains cusped ogee details.
