Description
Nos 1 and 2 Ghyllbeck Farm is a house that has been converted into two dwellings. It dates from the early to mid-18th century and is built of hammer-dressed stone with dressed quoins and a stone slate roof. The building is two storeys high and features a two-cell, central lobby-entry plan with a rear wing.
The facade is symmetrical with three bays. The doorway has raised monolithic jambs and a lintel, surrounded by a cyma-moulded frame. Above the doorway is a circular window with a raised keystone. On either side of the doorway, there are double-chamfered mullioned windows with raised surrounds, each originally having four lights but now modified to two wide lights. The gables are coped with kneelers, and there is a central stack on the ridge.
The rear wing is at a right angle to the main building and has three-light flat-faced mullioned windows with slightly recessed mullions (one mullion is missing) on each floor, along with a semicircular-arched window above an inserted doorway. There is also a gable stack. The window design on the facade closely resembles that of No 29 Station Road, which is dated 1718, suggesting that this house may have been built around the same time and possibly by the same mason.
