Description
Field 3-Rise Lock 16-18 on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal is a three-rise lock built around 1774-1777, designed by engineers James Brindley and John Longbotham. It features three adjoining wide chambers made of coursed dressed stone with stone coping. The walls of the upper two chambers curve outward at their tails and have stone steps on either side. The top chamber has two pairs of late 20th-century wooden gates, with each of the lower chambers also having a pair of wooden gates. The upper gates are formed by the lower gates of the chamber above. Each pair of gates is equipped with integral rack and pinion paddle gearing and adjacent boxed ground paddles, although the middle chamber has had its ground paddles removed. There is a stone set ginny ring at each gate, and each chamber has a wooden plank footbridge across its tail. An overflow weir is located on the offside from the towpath, with channels leading into it from the two lower chambers.
