Description

No 40 on Brighouse and Denholme Road is a former public house built around 1850-1860. It is a two-storey structure made of sandstone "brick" with rusticated ashlar quoins. The building features a moulded stone eaves cornice, coped gable ends, and flanking chimneys. On the first floor, there are two tall two-light square mullion casement windows, while the ground floor has modern bow windows. The doorway is topped with a cornice supported by console brackets. At the rear, there is a wing that includes a two-light square mullion window, which connects to No 44. This building is a partial rebuild of an 18th-century house, also two-storeys and made of sandstone. The original gable end on the north side has a saddlestone and kneelers, with a five-light mullioned window on the first floor and three blind lights. A former first-floor doorway has been adapted into a window.
