Description
No. 37 on Gentleman's Walk is a public house that dates back to around 1500, with alterations made from the 18th century onwards and a late 18th-century addition. The building features a combination of rendered timber-frame and rendered brick, topped with a pantile roof. It is situated on a corner site.
The elevation facing the Market Place has three storeys, with jettied sections at the first and second floors. There are two windows on the second floor and a single bay to the left. The building rises to four storeys and has a Greek Doric pub front that includes a central door with four steps leading up to it. The windows are a mix of sash and one casement, and there is a box cornice along the top. Two dormer gables are also present.
The late 18th-century addition features a corner pub front with a corner door, pilasters, and carved consoles that support a canopy. On the first floor, there is a semi-circular bay window with sash windows that have glazing bars, along with a wrought-iron balcony above. A door on the second floor is topped with a moulded semi-elliptical arch. A stringcourse runs between the second and third floors, and there is a small bracket cornice. The building also has 15th-century windows with cusped arches on the first floor.
