Description
No. 31 Gentleman’s Walk is a 19th-century shop located on a corner site. The building is constructed of brick with stucco detailing and features hipped slate and tile roofs. It has four storeys and four bays facing Gentleman’s Walk. The ground floor has a 20th-century shop front, while the first floor showcases Corinthian pilasters and a cornice that supports plain pilasters with egg and dart capitals. There is a cornice on the second floor, and sash windows with semi-circular top lights are framed by raised and panelled surrounds with keystone and impost moulding.
The Market Place facade displays a pyramidal window arrangement of three, two, and one on the top floor, with paired pilasters. The western half of this facade projects forward and features quoins, suggesting it may have been treated as or originally been a separate building. The first floor design continues, but the lower second and third floors have sash windows with rubbed brick flat arches. A projecting moulded cornice and parapet complete the exterior.
Possibly there are 14th-century undercrofts. To the west of the 19th-century cellar extending beneath Weaver's Lane are two possibly 14th-century rendered brick side chambers, both with a four-centred profile. The southern chamber is arranged at right angles, while the other, higher chamber runs parallel to the building above. The orientation of the latter is unusual and seems to pre-date the known 14th-century layout of the market and the extension of the grounds of St. Peter Mancroft.
