Description
Nos. 3 and 4 Haymarket is a former house that has been converted into a shop, offices, and a surgery. The building features a 15th-century undercroft and has elements from the 16th, 18th, and 20th centuries. The first floor is constructed with a rendered timber frame, while the rear has brick stair turrets. The street-facing side is made of brick and has pantile roofs. The building has an L-shape plan, with its longest side running at right angles to the street.
The street facade consists of three storeys and five bays, featuring a 20th-century shop front with a central door. Sash windows with glazing bars and rubbed brick flat arches are present throughout, along with a bracket cornice. Inside, the left-hand ground floor has heavy 16th-century cross-beams and joists.
The rear range extends at right angles from the street and is mostly concealed by adjacent buildings. There is a 19th-century entry from the yard off White Lion Street, which includes a door with a moulded two-centre arch, a casement window to the right, and a blocked window to the left, both with drip moulds. An oriel window on the first floor features a crenellated parapet.
The interior includes partly re-made frieze windows on the south wall of the first floor. The first-floor ceiling has an arch-braced tie-beam design with later 16th-century battens added and some braces removed. There is re-framed linen-fold panelling that displays the rebus Q and vat for Curat. The undercroft, made of brick, runs at right angles to the street and contains two bays with diagonal and cross ribs, as well as blocked side chambers. A repositioned door at the west end features moulded jambs and carved spandrels. This building is also scheduled as an Ancient Monument.
