Description
West Scholes House and Cottage, dated 1694, is a notable late 17th century building with a rectangular plan and an irregular five-bay front, where the left-hand bay projects forward. The structure is built of coursed gritstone and features large quoins. It has a stone slate roof adorned with late 18th century corniced chimneys, which extends down over the break in the facade. The building includes saddlestones and kneelers at the rear.
The windows are chamfered mullions with configurations of 2, 4, 5, 6, and 7 lights, and there are drip moulds on the ground floor. Notably, the hall window, which has 7 lights, is positioned to the left of the main entrance, similar to the design at Headley Hall. Above the porch, there is an oval window, and another similar window is located at the first-floor level on the return of the break to the main block.
A deep, contemporary gritstone porch features flush quoins, saddlestones, and kneelers at the gable, which contains a dovecote and a panel inscribed with "W H: I H" above the date 1694. To the right, extending at an angle and bordering the east sills of a paved yard, is a single-storey wing that formerly served as a bier. This wing is also constructed of coursed gritstone with flush quoins and has a stone slate roof that extends to create a covered way supported by stone slab piers.
