Description
Denholme United Reformed Church is a United Reformed Chapel built in 1844 and enlarged in 1896. It features deeply-coursed, dressed sandstone with ashlar dressings and has a Welsh slate roof. The building is two storeys high with a three-bay symmetrical pediment-gable front that includes pilaster quoins. Two doorways are accessed by three steps, set within an ashlar porch with simple pilaster jambs supporting an entablature. There are plain flanking windows, and a central first-floor triple group window with marginal glazing, flanked by single lights, all of which are round-arched and archivolted. A first-floor sill band runs along the façade, and a plaque indicates the chapel was built in 1844 and enlarged in 1896. An oculus is present in the tympanum of the pediment.
The six-bay side elevations have square-headed ground-floor windows and round-arched first-floor windows, with marginal glazing on the right elevation. The interior is notable for its pine fittings, likely dating from the 1896 enlargement. It features an oval gallery supported by slender Corinthian columns, with a panelled front and a dentilled frieze. The panelled pulpit has stairs on each side, and an organ is located within a round-arched recess at the front of the gallery level. Access to the gallery is provided by stairs on each side at the rear, and the ceiling has been lowered.
