Description
The Church of St. Paul is a church built in 1846 by J. B. Chantrell, designed in the Early English style. It is constructed from coursed gritstone with ashlar dressings and features a Welsh slate roof. The church includes a west tower, a 7-bay nave with lean-to aisles, and a 3-bay chancel that has a later vestry added on the north side.
The square, 3-stage west tower has set-back buttresses and a splay-footed stone spire with lucarnes, resting on a deep corbel table. The tower features lancet openings, including those in the bell-chamber, and has a small blind arcade at the base on the west side, along with a doorway on the south side. The aisles have small lancet windows, while the clerestorey features small paired lancets. The chancel is adorned with larger lancets, including a triple group that forms the east window, all of which have hood moulds and carved stops.
Inside, there is a 7-bay arcade on the north and south sides supported by quatrefoil piers with moulded capitals and arches. A west gallery, resting on slender columns, has an arcaded front. The vaulted roof is made of timber and plaster, featuring ribs and bosses. The pews include doors, and the chancel has been separated off to create ancillary accommodation, resulting in a lowered ceiling.
