Description

The building is a purpose-built children's hospital constructed in 1883, featuring a symmetrical elevation with a domestic character. It showcases finely detailed Jacobean and William and Mary architectural styles. The structure is two stories high with a basement and a two-tier attic, built from sandstone "brick" with ashlar dressings, demonstrating high-quality masonry. It has a steeply pitched slate roof, banded quoin pilasters, and string courses.

The front center is marked by tall, narrow William and Mary windows, flanked by shallow gabled breaks. These breaks contain mullioned canted bay windows with deep parapets on the ground floor, while the attic level features open, scrolled, carved pediment windows with scroll-decorated aprons. The first tier of the attic includes two large hipped roof dormers, and the second tier has five tall, narrow pedimented dormers, with the center flanked by tall corniced ashlar chimney stacks.

A recessed arched porch is located at the center of the front, with flanking pilaster strips that rise to a strapwork carved date panel. To the north, there is a short wing built around 1900, featuring an ogee domed stair tower that connects to a large two-story circular ward and operating theatre block from the same period. This section has tall, narrow windows on sill courses and small broken scrolled pediments set on string courses above the first-floor window heads. A tall octagonal chimney rises from the center of this block, and a delicate cast iron balustrade adorns the parapet.
