Description

Penn Hospital, formerly the Children's Hospital, is a house and hospital built around 1770, with later alterations and additions. It is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and features slate roofs with truncated brick end stacks. The building stands three storeys high and has a symmetrical five-window range, with a two-storey, two-window range to the left. It has top friezes and cornices, as well as coped gables.

On the ground floor, there are two mid-19th century canted plastered bay windows with high parapets and horned sashes. The first floor features windows with rusticated wedge lintels and fluted keys above 12-pane horned sashes, while the second floor has casement windows. The left range has windows with rusticated wedge lintels and fluted keys above large mid-19th century four-pane horned sashes on the ground floor and 12-pane horned sashes on the first floor.

The round-headed entrance is framed by an aedicule with panelled pilasters, rosettes on the entablature blocks, and an open pediment, leading to a panelled door. The left return has a 20th-century bow window with a balcony above, and the right return features a canted bay window with a hipped tile roof. At the rear, there is a wing connecting to a late 20th-century old people's hospital. The interior was not inspected.
