Description

The Woodlands is a house, now a residential home, built in 1899 by H T Hare. It is constructed of English bond brick with sandstone dressings and features a gabled plain tile roof with brick parapets and copings, along with tall brick stacks. The building has a double-depth plan and is designed in the Arts and Crafts style, consisting of 2 storeys and an attic. The garden front has 5 bays, with 3 gabled bays at the center. It includes wood mullioned and transomed windows with up to 4 lights, a central 2-storey bay window, and a bay to the left of center that features 2 semi-circular arches with a Doric column leading to a recessed grand-floor entrance. The other elevations have similar window designs. The left gable has a 2-storey bay window connecting to a rear left wing, which has a 3-light window in a heavy stone surround at a canted angle and a 2-light stone-mullioned window next to an arched doorway with a stone architrave beneath a flat hood. The rear wing has projecting gabled wings flanking a central recessed bay, which is topped with a balustraded parapet over continuous stone-mullioned and transomed first-floor windows above a lean-to with 2-light stone-mullioned windows. The interior is complete and lavishly executed, featuring panelled ground-floor rooms, wall decoration by Morris and Co., lincrusta friezes and ceilings, classical and Arts and Crafts fireplaces with do Morgan tilework, and a panelled stairhall with a dog-leg staircase.
