Description
The base of Lady Godiva's Cross, located to the south of the Church of St Bartholomew in Wolverhampton, is an early medieval preaching cross made of ashlar. It features three round steps and a part of a round shaft, all of which are sunk below the surface and surrounded by a later revetment in the excavated area. A plaque on the church wall details its history: it was erected by Lady Godiva, the Lady of the Manor of Nether Penn, for the use of itinerant preachers from Dudley Priory and remained in use until the construction of the first church around 1200. This structure is a rare and important historical survival.
