Description

The Church of St Paul and St Jude is a large church constructed between 1847 and 1848, designed by the architectural partnership of Mallinson and Healy. It is similar in style to their contemporary Church of St Mary at Wyke. The church is of uniform plan, featuring a prominent crossing tower. The architectural details are executed in the Early English style. The nave and transepts are of equal height, and a south aisle is distinguished by its cross-gabled form. The west front includes a triple group of lancet windows and a rose window above the entrance. The east end is characterised by grouped lancet windows. A south porch is present, featuring capitals decorated with stiff leaf motifs. Some plate tracery is incorporated into the design. The crossing tower is tall with shallow stepped clasping buttresses, and its bell stage has two-light shafted openings. The tower rises to a graceful octagonal spire with thin lucarnes. The tower and spire are notable landmarks on the Manningham hillside, effectively closing the view up St Paul's Road and dominating the junction of Church Street and Skinner Lane.
