Description
This is an aisled barn located 10 metres south-east of Number 20 (Old Hall) in Silsden, dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century. It is constructed of hammer-dressed stone and features a stone slate roof. The barn consists of five bays and has quoins. There is a cart entry, cut back from the southern aisle, supported by timber posts and a lintel. A shop window was inserted around 1980 to the right of the cart entry. A doorway is set within the re-entrant angle, while the left return has an original doorway with composite jambs and a chamfered surround for the southern aisle. There is also a first-floor taking-in-door to the hayloft, along with another inserted doorway and window that retains small-paned glazing and has a re-used wooden lintel.
Inside, the barn features five bays of post-and-truss construction, with posts resting on padstones. The posts on either side of the threshing floor have king-posts and single vertical struts, with curved chamfered braces connecting to the tie-beam and arcade-plate. An extra truss next to the second western truss supports separate purlins, with a one-metre gap between the trusses. Two trusses have replaced fish-bone king-posts. The north cart entry has mortices for a half-hung door. The barn is prominently situated next to the Old Hall.
