Description

Numbers 3 and 5 Town Head is a house that has been converted into two dwellings. It is dated 1696 and features hammer-dressed stone with a stone slate roof. The building is two storeys high and has a three-cell, direct-entry plan with a single-storey outshut at the rear. The structure has quoins and is adorned with double-chamfered mullioned windows. The ground floor windows have hoodmoulds with decorative stops, while the first-floor windows have nearly square reveals.

The first cell includes three-light windows on both floors. The second cell features an eight-light window with a king-mullion and a four-light window above it. There is a doorway with composite jambs and a Tudor-arched lintel that has a decorative date inscription, surrounded by a chamfered frame. Above this doorway is a small circular chamfered window. The third cell, which is No. 5, has an inserted doorway with monolithic jambs and four-light windows, with a five-light window above. The left gable is coped and has a shaped kneeler, and there are two stacks on the ridge.

At the rear, the building has a three-light and a two-light chamfered mullioned window on the first floor of the third cell. The outshut features a doorway with tie-stone jambs and a chamfered surround set into the side wall, along with a three-light chamfered mullioned window next to a small chamfered light. The left-hand return wall has a five-light double-chamfered mullioned window with a hoodmould that has a heart-shaped stop, and there are three-light windows above.

Inside, the housebody contains stop-chamfered spine beams and an original oak-panelled cupboard.
