Description

No 280 Manningham Lane is a villa built around 1860, part of a group of similar villas. It features a two-storey design made of coursed, roughly dressed sandstone with an ashlar plinth, quoins, and a plat band. The building has a bed mould string with flat brackets that support the flat eaves of its hipped slate roofs, along with flashing corniced chimneys.

The elevation of No 1, which is set back slightly from No 280, is symmetrical with three windows, each framed by carved ashlar surrounds and plain quoins that extend down to a sill band on the first floor. The ground floor includes two canted pilastered bay windows. The central doorway is framed by an architrave surround against an ashlar panel, featuring elaborately carved scrolled console brackets supporting a deep cornice with very shallow modillion brackets on the soffit.

The main front of No 280 is similar in style but has projecting, tripartite, pilastered windows on the ground floor and a block pattern frieze of entablatures. It also has a broad pilastered doorway with a modillion bracket cornice. There is a slightly recessed link to a projecting wing, which has plain eaves but otherwise maintains similar window designs. This villa is part of a cul-de-sac of villas set in large, well-wooded gardens.
