Description
Laithehouse, located to the north of Lower Fold Farmhouse, is an unoccupied building dating from 1721, although it has the character of the second half of the 17th century, with an added 18th-century bay and a 19th-century subdivision. The structure is built of coursed stone and features a stone slate roof. It stands two storeys high and includes a rear aisle and a lean-to.
The front of the house has two first-floor windows and quoins on the left side. There is a blocked doorway with a chamfered, quoined surround and a lintel inscribed 'H(orI)R 1721'. To the left and right are later 19th-century doorways with plain stone surrounds, with the right doorway now blocked. Each side of the doors features a double-chamfered mullion window; the left window originally had four lights but now has two, while the right window has three lights with a fourth light added.
On the first floor, there are two six-light double-chamfered mullion windows; the left window has been reduced to four lights, and the right window has all but one light blocked. A corniced end stack is located on the left side. The laithe to the right has three bays and quoins on the right. There is a central chamfered, quoined doorway that is now blocked, along with a later cow door to the right, which is also blocked and has a plain stone surround. A tie stone and a window rest on the left jamb of this door. Above the central door is a later window with a stone lintel. The right side features a shaped kneeler and ashlar coping. An added bay to the left of the house has quoins and one two-light window with a stone lintel and cill on each floor, with the ground floor's mullion removed. The left end has a shaped kneeler, ashlar coping, and a shouldered stack.
At the rear, the house has two two-light double-chamfered mullion windows. The laithe features a cart door with a tooled, quoined surround, a chamfered quoined doorway to the right with a small chamfered window next to it, a later door with a plain stone surround to the left, and one chamfered slit-vent. The right return of the laithe has chamfered slit-vents.
Inside, there is a beam dated 1662.
