Description

This is a barn and cowhouse located at Edge End Farm, approximately 25 metres southeast of the farmhouse. It is likely from the 17th century and features a partly cruck-framed structure made of coursed rubble gritstone with a stone slate roof. The building has an L-shaped plan, consisting of a single storey and a hayloft. The barn has three bays, while the cowhouse projects from the front right with two and a half bays.

The exterior includes quoins and two board doors leading into the barn. On the right side, the end gable of the cowhouse has a door in a bonded gritstone surround and an inserted casement window to the left. The left return of the cowhouse wing features a part-blocked doorway in a heavy gritstone surround. At the rear, there is a cart entrance to the central bay of the barn, which has a quoined surround and the remains of a har-hung door.

Inside, the barn contains three pairs of cruck frames with bases raised in the walling. The central truss has one blade supported on a high brick column. Most tie beams have been altered or removed, and there are single purlins with a square-set ridge at the saddle apex. The cowhouse wing features peg-jointed principal rafter trusses.
