Description
The Church of St. Mary is a Grade II listed building constructed between 1878 and 1879 by architect J. Fawcett. It is built from deeply coursed and squared gritstone with a punched finish and features stone slate roofs. The church is designed in the Perpendicular style and includes a west tower, a four-bay nave with a south porch, aisles, a clerestorey, and a two-bay chancel with a north vestry.
The west tower is three stages high and has diagonal buttresses. It features a three-light west window with a hood mould and head-stops, a square-headed cusped light above, louvred two-light Y-tracery bell openings, and an embattled parapet. The aisles have two-light windows, and similar hooded lights are present in the chancel, with buttresses between each window. The clerestorey has four square-headed windows, each with five lights and dripmoulds. The roll-moulded parapet copings rise to the gable apexes, which are topped with crosses. The east window consists of five lights with panel tracery.
Inside, the church features well-carved oak furnishings and detailed stonework. The nave has octagonal arcade piers with moulded bases and capitals, and the arches are adorned with a double-cavetto mould. Carved heads of former incumbents are positioned above each aisle pier.
