Description

This is a cruck-framed house, now used as a cowhouse with a hayloft, located approximately 10 metres south of Windhill Farmhouse. It is possibly from the 16th century and constructed of irregular gritstone rubble with a stone slate roof. The building has two storeys and one and a half bays, featuring a boulder plinth and large quoins. Most openings have been altered, and both gables are partially collapsed. The east gable still has a three-light double-chamfered mullion window with one mullion.

Inside, there are two pairs of cruck frames; one pair is built into the east gable, while the other is an internal truss raised within the walling. The internal truss has a moulded tie beam at head height with soffit mortices and peg holes for a ground floor doorway. The cruck blades are chamfer-stopped and have a continuous running soffit-mortice for infill. The wall tie beam has been sawn off, and there are curved windbraces supporting the chamfer-stopped purlins. The collar below the crossing apex features a notched lap joint, and the ridge is set diagonally. The east truss has chamfered tie beams, with the wall tie beam being cambered. The building was disused at the time of the last survey.
