Description
This is probably a medieval building, although it has been altered later. It is a cruck-framed building, with one original cruck truss still in place. The walls are of coursed stone, with red brick window dressings and eaves courses. The roof is covered with stone slates, and it has end chimneys; there was originally also an off-centre chimney. It is a single-storey building with five windows, which have modern glazing set into the window openings. The substantial, full-height crucks rest on stylobates. On the rear of the cruck blades, there are exposed braces that are crossed and jointed. A ceiling is located below the collar ridge piece, which rests between the cruck blades (which are not jointed). A single purlin and curved windbraces are also present. A carpenter’s mark, numbered II, survives. One cruck blade on the north side has two "ox eyes" (small round openings) concealed by plaster and hair within deep round holes, one on the south face and one on the east face of the cruck.
