Description

The building is a barn and cowhouse located on the east side of the farmyard at The Oaks Farm, dating from the 17th or 18th century for the cowhouse and early 19th century for the barn. The structure features some internal timber framing in the cowhouse, which is constructed of gritstone; the earlier sections are sparsely mortared, while the 19th-century parts are coursed and squared. The roofs are made of stone slate.

The tall threshing barn is situated to the left and is built onto a low cowhouse that includes a hayloft. The cowhouse has two entrances with heavy gritstone surrounds, although one jamb of the left-hand doorway has collapsed. There is a square pitching hole on the right return. The barn features large opposed central doorways, both with neat quoin reveals and wooden lintels, as well as two small doorways on the left, one of which is partially infilled, along with some square vents. A pigeon ledge with a dressed opening is located on the left return.

Inside the cowhouse, there is a cruck pair raised high on rough columns, along with a wall tie, a single purlin, and a diagonal-set ridge in a crossed apex. The structure also has halvings for windbraces and a purlin tie. The building is included partly for its group value.
