Description

This early 18th-century barn, cowhouse, and forge is located on Miller Lane in Midhopestones. The building is constructed of squared gritstone and has a stone slate roof, with corrugated iron to an outshut. It consists of a single range with a central partial outshut. It is a single storey with a central hayloft. Large quoins are visible on the exterior. A board door with a deep lintel is on the left side, and a casement window with glazing bars is on the right. The outshut has a board door and altered openings. Large, harr-hung doors in a boarded cart entrance are located to the right of the outshut, with a quoined right reveal. Moulded kneelers and gable copings are present to the right end only. The rear of the building features altered openings and a tall rough-ashlar stack at eaves, situated at the forge end. The interior of the left-hand portion retains a forge hearth constructed from large gritstone blocks. The barn section to the right end has an early principal rafter truss. A brick addition to the rear left is not of particular interest. The building is included on the list partly due to its group value.
