Description

The Caretaker's house and attached gateways at Kettlebridge Nursery First School were built in 1904 by WJ Hale for the Sheffield School Board. The structure is made of coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof with two coped gable stacks and buttresses. The wrought-iron railings and gates enhance its appearance, which includes shouldered coped gables.

This two-storey building has an L-plan layout and a two-window range. The windows are plain sashes. On the left side, there is a projecting gabled wing with a single sash window above and a segment-headed tripartite sash window below, which has a hoodmould and an elongated keystone with a segmental cornice. The entrance bay on the right features a small sash window above a segment-headed doorway, also with a hoodmould, elongated keystone, and segmental cornice, leading to a mid-20th century half-glazed door with a fanlight. The right return of the building has two sashes above and a smaller central window below.

The attached gateways and railings to the right include a double gate with rectangular piers that have inscribed roundels and rounded cross gabled caps. To the left is a single gate with similar square piers and a short railing adjoining the house. The right side features a railing with a chamfered plinth and intermediate piers, extending approximately 70 meters. WJ Hale, who lived from 1862 to 1929, designed several notable schools and Nonconformist churches in Sheffield between 1893 and 1929, and this building serves as an ancillary to what is considered his best design.
