Caretaker's house and attached gateways. 1904. By WJ Hale. For the Sheffield School Board. Coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings and slate roof, with 2 coped gable stacks with buttresses. Wrought-iron railing and gates. Shouldered coped gables. 2 storeys; 2 window range. L-plan. Windows are plain sashes. Projecting gabled wing to left, has a single sash and below, a segment-headed tripartite sash with hoodmould and elongated keystone with segmental cornice. Entrance bay, to right, has a small sash, and below, a segment-headed doorway with hoodmould, elongated keystone and segmental cornice. Mid C20 half-glazed door with fanlight. Right return has 2 sashes above, and a central smaller window below. INTERIOR not inspected. To right, attached gateways and railing. Double gate with rectangular piers with inscribed roundels and rounded cross gabled caps. To left, single gate with similar square piers, and short railing adjoining house. To right, railing with chamfered plinth and intermediate piers, approx 70m long. WJ Hale, 1862-1929, designed a number of noteworthy schools and Nonconformist churches in Sheffield between 1893 and 1929. This building is an ancillary to what is arguably his best design.
