Description
This rear range is part of Darnall School, now used as a playgroup. It was built in 1892, and altered in the late 20th century, designed by CJ Innocent for the Sheffield School Board. The building is constructed of coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings, featuring gabled and hipped slate roofs with decorative ridge tiles. A distinctive octagonal wooden bell turret with a swept octagonal spire and finial sits atop the roof. A single lozenge-shaped ridge stack is also present. The architectural style is Gothic Revival.
The exterior has a sill band and coped gables with kneelers. The building is single-storey with a basement, extending across eight window bays. The central section features two large through-eaves dormers, each containing a cross casement window with shouldered lights set within a pointed arched recess. A buttress stands between the windows, topped with an unglazed lancet. To the right is a single window, followed by a smaller through-eaves dormer with a shouldered single light. Further along, a gabled cross-wing displays a graduated four-light window with shouldered lights within a pointed arched recess, incorporating three breathers in the peak. A lower hipped section features a two-light flush mullioned window, with a door below. A set-back entrance block to the left has a through-eaves dormer and a single window. The left gable displays a three-light pointed arched window, with a two-light and a door positioned below, both featuring segment-headed arches. The rear elevation mirrors the front's fenestration. The basement level has four blocked Tudor arched openings, the rightmost now containing a narrow door.
To the left, a gabled cross-wing features a graduated three-light window with a pointed central light, flanked by shouldered lights. Below this are two Tudor arched windows with glazing bars. Another hipped section contains two two-light flush mullioned windows, accompanied by a larger flush mullioned window beneath. Adjacent to this is a door with an elliptical arched tympanum and a mullioned overlight, flanked to the right by a small single window. The interior of the building was not inspected.
