Cruicible Steel Shops On South East Side Of Sandserson Kaysers Darnall Works

The crucible steel shops on the south-east side of Sanderson Kayser's Darnall Works, built in 1872 for Sanderson Brothers, are now used as stores. These single-storey buildings are constructed of brick with stone dressings and feature Welsh slate and corrugated asbestos roofs. The façade includes a series of windows arranged in groups of three, two, six, six, and four, with round-headed openings and stone sills, mostly unglazed. There are seven cross-ridge crucible stacks, each likely containing six flues, along with two smaller single stacks on the rear wall facing Wilfrid Street. The front elevation has wooden cross casements, some with barred heads, and six doorways that have been enlarged with steel or concrete lintels. The rear also features similar blocked and boarded-up windows. Inside, there are crucible furnaces on either side, with iron brackets for drying shelves and tools, as well as strutted king post roof trusses. The Darnall Works site was initially developed in 1835, and this range was added in 1872, increasing the works' capacity by 84 holes. Darnall Works was one of several large-scale crucible steel works in Sheffield, but it is the last to survive and is unique in Britain.
