Description
Pluto Works is a crucible steel works built around 1890, now serving as a garage, offices, and workshops. The building is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and features gabled and hipped slate roofs.
On the exterior, there is a plinth, wooden gutter, and brackets. The structure is two storeys tall with a ten-window range, and the buildings are arranged around a polygonal yard. The main range facing Princess Street includes a workshop block with a canted corner on the left. It has a tall round-arched cart entrance, which is infilled in the lower part with round-arched glazing, and is flanked by two large round-arched glazing bar windows. Above the right window, there is a flat-headed three-light casement.
To the right is the office range, which features two truncated gable and ridge stacks. It has a triple plain sash window on the left, flanked by a double and a single plain sash window on the right. Beyond these, there are two widely spaced single plain sashes. Below this window arrangement, there is a central late 20th-century door with an overlight, flanked by large shop windows with toplights, all surrounded by rendered and painted finishes. To the left, there is a cart entrance with a wooden lintel and double board door, and to the right, two reglazed windows.
The left return facing East Coast Road includes the crucible shop, which has an eight-flue crucible stack in the left gable and a similar truncated stack in the right gable. There are three large casements, two of which are boarded. To the right, there is a late 20th-century entrance and gateway.
The interior has not been inspected. This building represents one of the many small crucible steel works that contributed to the steel production alongside larger firms.
