Description
The entrance gateway to the former steelworks of Thomas Firth and Sons Siemens Department dates from around 1900. It is constructed of rusticated ashlar and features a plinth with flat coping. The gateway includes a carriage arch with a segmental head and multiple keystones, along with a doorway below. On either side of the arch, there are recessed panels with keystone lintels, and above these are windows. All openings are now filled with 20th-century railings. Below the coping, there is an inscription that reads "Thos Firth & Sons Ltd Siemens Dept." This gateway served as the entrance to the Norfolk Melting Shop, which was part of the renowned company. The name reflects the Siemens open-hearth process, which had become the standard method for producing steel in bulk by 1900. The large-scale steel industry in Sheffield began relocating to this area from the mid-19th century onwards.
