Description

The Crucible Steel Works, located at the junction with Effingham Road in Sheffield, is a late 19th-century building that has undergone mid-20th-century alterations. Constructed of brick, it features lean-to roofs made of slate and corrugated asbestos. The central crucible stack is now capped and has approximately six flues. On Stoke Street, there is a workshop with four segment-headed wooden cross casements and two small stacks that rise through the roof. On Effingham Road, there is a similar workshop with a higher roofline and a larger capped stack, along with four 20th-century metal framed casements, one of which is larger than the others. The interior has not been inspected. This building is an example of the many small crucible steel works that once existed, which produced steel to complement the output of larger bulk steel manufacturers.
