SHEFFIELD

SK38NE STOKE STREET 784-1/6/691 (South East side) Crucible steel works at junction with Effingham Road

GV II

Crucible steel works, now workshop. Late C19, with mid C20 alterations. Brick with lean-to slate and corrugated asbestos roofs. Central crucible stack, now capped, with approx 6 flues. To Stoke Street, a workshop with 4 segment-headed wooden cross casements and 2 small stacks rising through the roof. To Effingham Road, a similar workshop with higher roof line and a larger capped stack. 4 C20 metal framed casements, the right one larger. INTERIOR not inspected. An example of the once numerous small crucible steel works whose output complemented that of the large bulk steel producers.
