Description
The crucible steel melting shop, located approximately 10 meters west of number 286, was built around 1890 and is now used as a store. It features late 20th-century alterations and was constructed for Huntsman & Co. The building is made of brick and has a lean-to corrugated asbestos roof. A crucible stack is positioned on the rear wall. It is a single-storey structure with segment-headed unglazed wooden cross casement windows that have bars. The left bay projects under a catslide roof and includes inserted double garage doors. In the return angle, there are two windows. To the right, the main block has a segment-headed door with an overlight and two additional windows. The right return has a blocked door. The rear of the building shows metal reinforcing bands and the ends of tie rods connected to the stack. Inside, there were originally 12 melting holes, which are now infilled, and wooden roof trusses supported by iron corbels. This shop was built for a company linked to Benjamin Huntsman, who invented the crucible steel-making process.
