Description

The former Adelphi Cinema, now a bingo club, was built in 1920 and has undergone some alterations in the late 20th century. It is constructed of brick, partly rendered, with terracotta and faience tile on the front, and features a hipped and gabled slate roof in the Baroque Revival style.

The exterior includes a plinth, coped parapets, and a full-width late 20th-century canopy. The building has two storeys plus attics and a five-window range. In the center, there is a projecting triple bay defined by faience pilasters with dentilled cornices. Above this is a squat square tower supported by volutes, featuring a cornice and dome. The dome has four round-arched projections with oval windows and is topped with a finial.

In the center of the front, there is a round-arched coved recess lined with colored tiles, featuring a hoodmould and an enriched double keystone, which contains a Diocletian window with two 2-light casements below it. Below this, there are four pairs of doors with lattice glazing bars and overlights. On either side of the first floor, there are 2-light casements with a cartouche in a panel below, and above them, a square window with lattice glazing bars. Below, there is a panel for posters. The flanking bays feature a round-arched blank panel with a keystone on the first floor, with three small square windows below it, and above, a 3-light window with brick mullions and lattice glazing bars. Below these, there are multiple glazed doors with overlights.

The interior remains largely original, featuring an auditorium with pilasters, a segment-arched panelled ceiling, and a moulded proscenium arch with a central crest flanked by torches. There is a U-shaped gallery with a latticework plaster front. The entrance lobby and landings have coved ceilings with enriched friezes and glazed tile dadoes. The concrete stairs are complemented by cast-iron balustrades. Cinemas from this period, specifically those built between 1918 and the early 1930s before the introduction of sound, are relatively rare. The building was vacant at the time of the survey.
